Turning Negatives into Positives

I volunteer at a nonprofit called Kate’s Club in Atlanta. The mission of the organization is to help children (ages 5-18) deal with the loss of a parent or sibling. They do exercises to help them process their grief, give them a space where they can grieve together, experience community, and of course, play together. It’s an amazing organization that is there for these kids in their darkest hour.

Recently, I had a conversation with one of the volunteers, Josiah, after our Saturday session. As we were talking, and I found out that he’s a 19 year old college student who volunteers at every Kate’s Club event. I asked him how long he’s been doing this, and he told me since he was seven years old. Turns out that he was one of the kids who lost a family member, and they took care of him for 11 years! When he became of age, he started volunteering, so he could give back to the organization that gave him so much. Most of the Kate’s Club volunteers are people who have lost a loved one themselves. They go to volunteer to help those who are hurting, heal. And through that process, they go through their own healing. And the children do too, and because of that, the children’s lives are never the same.

The world is filled with pain. So are our lives. When we have to process this pain, we have one of two options, to allow it to wound us and allow us to feel sorry for ourselves, or to use it to help others who are going through something similar. If we choose the former, we become more broken. If we choose the latter, we become more whole. So the question is, what will you do with your hardships?
